What will bring on labour

Search for: Search. Sex OK, if you are 40 weeks plus, are feeling huge, tired and uncomfortable, nooky might be the last thing on your mind — but it COULD help! Perhaps TMI, but semen is rich in prostaglandins, which are the chemicals that are used in hospital inductions to kick-start labour, so sex could ripen and soften your cervix and get things going.

Could be worth a go if you're up for it! When your nipples are stimulated, your body produces Oxytocin — the same hormone that causes contractions in labour. You'd probably have to do a whole lot of twiddling for it to be effective, but perhaps if done in conjunction with other methods, it could work!

Some mums swear by having a hot curry to start off labour — the belief being that having spicy food in your tum could stimulate your uterus. That means there is no conclusive evidence as to whether or not it works, however to cover both bases it is important that both participants orgasm so it is probably one of the more fun methods of trying to bring on labour!

There is some evidence that nipple stimulation increases the number of women who go into labour within 72 hours, when compared to women who do nothing and also reduces the rate of post- partum haemorrhage, but there is little agreement of the timing, method and frequency. Again, it might be worth a try. Castor oil is one of the most frequently suggested methods to try. A study published in showed castor oil had no harmful effects on mother or baby, but it also had no benefit either and had no effect on the time to birth.

However there are no large scale, good quality studies in this area and the only conclusive evidence seems to be that all women who take castor oil feel sick and most get diarrhoea! I would give this one a miss. There are some studies which show a good effect from acupuncture but others have actually shown an increase in the need for medical induction and a higher rate of intervention during labour so it is inconclusive as to whether or not acupuncture actually works.

There is promise here though and there are some interesting small scale studies that show good results. There is some evidence that sweeping the membranes reduces the duration of postdates pregnancies. Robotics usage also extends beyond just in-house operations for food companies. Ghost and virtual kitchen companies are also leaning into using robots to deliver food to customers. Kitchen United this week launched a five-day pilot program using the Kiwibot to take restaurant orders from its site at the Westfield Valley Fair mall in the Bay Area to homes within a half-mile radius.

Reef Virtual Kitchens has a similar program with Cartken in Miami. Fast-food companies Domino's and Chipotle are also both involved with Softbank -backed Nuro. Domino's launched a pilot in Houston with Nuro's autonomous car this past spring. And Chipotle disclosed in March it had made an investment in Nuro as a part of its funding round in late A recent report from EMSI, "The Demographic Drought," noted that while automation can help alleviate labor pains, it faces two challenges. First, robots can't fully replace people.

And second, the current labor shortage isn't going anywhere, and workers will be needed to actually build robots and other automated technology solutions.
