In the spring of , President Woods instructed the men of Delta Alpha to seek affiliation with a recognized fraternity. Since its organization, Delta Alpha had played a leading role in student affairs on the campus. A stated purpose of the founders was to create closer unity between the various departments at Murray State, and they had made substantial progress toward the attainment of that goal.

The fraternity had included in its membership students from all areas of study in the college. Many of its members had won coveted honors and held prominent positions of leadership and responsibility in student and campus affairs. The men took pride in the accomplishments and service they had rendered to their college.

As a member of the General Assembly from —, he was a dominant and influential force in creating a State Normal School Commission and establishing two normal schools — one in Murray and the other in Morehead.
